I started a blog today. Why not? It's 2010, I work in the media industry, its easy and free and I like to think that the culmination of my tastes, ideas, life experiences and thoughts about the world we live in might be of interest to someone. At the very least, I might end up meeting other people who either share my views or challenge them in thoughtful dialogue.
Anyway, the point of today was to get organized for work which will begin in earnest on Monday. But reading an article about Whole Foods' CEO John Mackey on the subway this morning led me to think about the contradictions we left leaning, "progressives" often find ourselves living and I thought it would be something worth writing about.
I really hadn't planned on posting anything today since I'm only getting started on my organizational project and its already close to 4:00 but my newly minted blog page looked naked without a post and I wanted to add something.
It occurred to me as I left my office building to forage for something healthy to eat in midtown (Thank you Thalia), that I've told a few people about my feelings for Alec Baldwin and that this would be an appropriate subject for my inaugural blog posting.
I like, respect and admire Alec Baldwin. I love the guy in the same kind of man-crush, continually brings a smile to my face manner that I reserve for John McEnroe, John Stewart, Woody Allen and James Brown. He's an extraordinarily talented actor, funny (obviously), smart, not afraid to tell people what he thinks, is genuinely self-reflective and even loves classical music for God's sake! He's also quite willing to go out on a limb with his political beliefs and back them up intellectually. He's charming, engaging and giving of his time to organizations and causes he believes in.
I'm really looking forward to this year's Oscars. I think he'll make a terrific host. I sincerely hope that we are all treated to the continually outspoken, sometimes angry always passionate and delightfully curious Alec Baldwin in the decade ahead.

ReplyDeleteHey Colin,
ReplyDeleteNice to see that you've followed me into the blogosphere! I already put you in my blogroll (www.nissology.com) just in case you make any island or PEI reference.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
Hans
I for one welcome you to the blogosphere, and look forward to reading your musings. I would note, however, that despite his nickname of "Johnny Mac" his name is spelled McEnroe, not MacEnroe. Dont wanna piss of those you love.
